The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Medical University of Wrocław (UMW) is implementing the project ‘Towards gastric cancer screening implementation in the European Union’ (TOGAS). One of the aims of the researchers is to establish a strategy for gastric cancer prevention in Europe. This would consist of diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection and treatment of the infection.

Approximately 4,000 people die of gastric cancer annually in Poland. Helicobacter infection is a known risk factor for gastric cancer (Helicobacter is an oncogene). Treatment of the infection, i.e. elimination of this factor, reduces the risk of gastric cancer, as clearly shown in studies in Asian countries.

The project is being carried out by a consortium of leading centres involved in gastric cancer and the conduct of prevention programmes. The study will take three years to complete and is of great epidemiological and practical importance, as it will form the basis for the implementation of gastric cancer screening in Europe.
