Paulina Macierzyńska and Aleksandra Sokołowska, students from the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Wrocław (UWr), have won Fulbright scholarships under the BioLAB programme. The winners will serve one-year research internships at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the USA.

Aleksandra Sokolowska is interested in biochemistry and crystallography. She is interested in structural studies using X-ray diffraction, of biologically important molecules – both macromolecules and smaller, ‘organic’ ones. Her internship will explore the biochemical and structural mechanisms of gene regulation involving RNA.

Paulina Macierzynska’s interests include modern methods of examining biological samples for forensic purposes, including mass spectrometry, chromatographic techniques and coupled methods. Her project will focus on the study of misfolded amyloid-forming proteins, which are linked to Alzheimer’s disease, among others.
