Developing an innovative diagnostic and therapeutic decision support system based on artificial intelligence algorithms in child and adolescent psychiatric care is the aim of the ‘Mentalio’ project, launched at the University Hospital of Krakow.

In addition to psychiatric specialists, IT specialists representing the company Nivalit are also involved. The whole project is financed as part of a competition announced by the Medical Research Agency.

According to the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, ‘Mentalio’ is the first project of its kind to make use of artificial intelligence to assess patients’ mental and emotional states in depth.

As part of the clinical trial, which will involve almost 1,500 patients aged 13-21, as well as their parents and carers, the team behind the University Hospital will develop proprietary questionnaires designed for both parents, patients and professionals. The ‘Mentalio’ system, once the data from the questionnaires has been entered, will suggest to the clinician not only likely diagnoses, but also recommendations for choosing an effective diagnostic pathway.
