Not every stone lying by the roadside has earthly roots. An inconspicuous find near Antonin in Wielkopolska turned out to be a fragment of a fresh meteorite, which has been sought after since its fall was filmed in the summer of 2021.

Clear evidence of the fragment’s cosmic origin was provided by radioisotope measurements carried out at the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) in Świerk. Their results have just been published in the journal Meteoritics & Planetary Science.

This is the first time in Poland that it has been possible to find a meteorite on the basis of video footage recorded by bolide network cameras. “We are very satisfied that our experience and measuring apparatus helped to confirm its cosmic origin and assign it to a specific bolide phenomenon”, said Zbigniew Tyminski from the POLATOM Radioisotope Centre at the NCBJ, one of the coordinators of the Polish Bolide Network and co-author of the mentioned article.
