New biofuel production technology developed at the Poznan University of Technology

17.12.2018

Dr Eng. Piotr Oleśkowicz-Popiel from Poznan University of Technology won the AgroBioTop competition. The award committee appreciated the development of an environmentally friendly new technology for producing biofuels from wastes from cheese and yogurt production.

The developed technology is single-stage and based on the use of acid whey. Poland ranks fourth in Europe (after Germany, France and Italy) in the production of cottage cheese. The by-product of the production is whey, which is usually simply drained to sewage, and sometimes is directed to lakes or rivers.

EU countries have pledged to reduce food waste to 30% in 2025 and 50 percent by 2030. The technology developed by Dr Eng. Piotr Oleśkowicz-Popiel for the production of biofuels supports the achievement of this objective, also affects the diversification of sources of energy production.

The AgroBioTop award committee is appointed by the Biotechnology Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
