Nicolaus Copernicus University joins the astronomical network OPTICON-RadioNet Pilot

29.03.2021

The largest European coordinating network for astronomical research – OPTICON-RadioNet Pilot (ORP) has been launched. Astronomers from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń will take part in ORP works. It provides European scientists with access to a wide range of telescopes and will support the scientific development of young astronomers.

The project is worth EUR 15 million and is financed under the Horizon 2020 program. It aims to develop the so-called multi-faceted astronomy, covering not only the study of a wide range of electromagnetic radiation, but also gravitational waves, cosmic rays and neutrinos.

The project involves 37 scientific institutions from 15 countries in Europe, Australia and South Africa. As part of the project, the scientists will develop standards for sky observation and data analysis for optical telescopes and radio telescopes. European astronomers will have easier access, for example, to the 11-meter optical telescope in South Africa or the 100-meter radio telescope in Bonn.
