Photocatalytic materials from Gdansk University of Technology to purify water and air

Researchers at the Department of Process Engineering and Chemical Technology at the Gdansk University of Technology are developing new photocatalytic materials to remove pharmaceutical residues from wastewater treatment streams and eliminate air pollution.

Photocatalytic semiconductor materials absorb solar radiation. The charge thus accumulated can be converted into reactive oxygen species. which are able to efficiently oxidise pollutants in water and air. One potential application of such materials is the degradation of stubborn pollutants. 

The research being undertaken at the Gdansk University of Technology is not just about water. A globally innovative photocatalyst capable of eliminating a wide range of air pollutants: nitrogen oxides, benzo(α)pyrene present in dust and volatile organic pollutants has also been developed.
