Poles trust science

01.06.2021

During the pandemic, science is gaining in importance in Poland – emphasizes the 3M study “State of Science Index” conducted in 2021 in 17 countries. It shows that as many as 89% of Poles trust science.

As a result of the pandemic, Poles have become less sceptical of science – 20% of the population do not trust it, 7% less than three years ago. Poles trust science more than other nationalities (Great Britain – 24%, France – 26%, Germany – 31%, USA – 35%). The most common cause of trust in science in Poland is the belief in scientific methodology (55%), and the cause of scepticism – contradictory opinions of scientists (62%). Scientists are among the most trusted groups in Poland – 60% of Poles believe scientists and engineers.

The study also shows that Poles miss the lifting of the requirement to use masks the most (70%). They believe that the priority for science should be to find a cure for already known diseases such as cancer (75%), rather than for new viruses such as SARS -CoV-2 (68%). At the same time, they consider air quality to be the most important challenges for scientists (48%), while the COVID-19 pandemic (44%) is a little less important.
