Polish DESIS instrument reaches the International Space Station

The Dragon ship with the DESIS instrument on board reached the International Space Station. The device will be used for satellite observation of the Earth. The engineers of the Space Research Center from the Polish Academy of Sciences participated in its construction.

DESIS (DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer) is designed to conduct hyperspectral observations of our planet, which means simultaneous imaging of the surface of the globe in 235 ranges of electromagnetic radiation.

Polish engineers were responsible for the design and implementation of the DESIS-POI system, which controls and positions the movable input mirror of the sensor. This mirror is the first element of DESIS, where radiation comes from the surface of the Earth. The task of the mirror is to direct the radiation to the further part of the instrument, including the next immobile mirrors and the telescope – explains the Space Research Center.
