Polish Museum has the only mummy of a pregnant woman in the world

05.05.2021

The mummy from the National Museum in Warsaw belongs to a pregnant woman. This is the only such known case in the world. The latest research by scientists from the Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) and the University of Warsaw (UW) has just been published in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

The mummy was supposed to be found in the royal tombs at Thebes, but this cannot be verified at this stage of the research. At first it was believed that it was the mummy of priest Hor-Dzhuti from the 1st century BC. In 2016, thanks to tomographic examinations, it was established that the embalmed body belonged to a woman.

According to the Polish Academy of Sciences, the latest radiological examinations showed that the deceased woman was 20-30 years old and was between the 26th and 30th week of pregnancy. This is the only discovered mummy with a fetus in the womb.

The mummy will enable the study of pregnancy in antiquity, as well as the analysis of Egyptian funeral customs and the importance of pregnancy in Egyptian religion. The discovery was made as part of the Warsaw Mummy Project.
