Scientists at the Fahrenheit University (from the Gdansk University of Technology in collaboration with the Medical University of Gdansk) are participating in a multi-centre, international study on the structure of human milk. The project is being carried out as part of the OPUS 24+LAP/Weave competition of the National Science Centre.

Understanding how the composition of human milk from different stages of lactation influences the rate of digestion is furthermore expected to help better understand the ways in which metabolic mechanisms develop in the body at a very early stage of life. It will also provide insight into how these aspects may prevent the development of chronic diseases in later life. There is currently a lack of available research results in this area.

The research work will be carried out in collaboration with scientists from Germany. Funding of more than PLN 1.9 million has been allocated to carry out the research in Poland. Accompanying research by the German partner will be funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation).
