The team of Prof. Paweł Moskal from the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow is working on improving the technique of PET positron emission tomography to determine not only the location, but also the structure, differentiation, type and degree of malignancy of the tumor.
In the journal Nature Communications, scientists from Kraków published the first ever three-photon PET image. This is a big step forward, as traditional images generated by the currently used PET tomographs are created on the basis of two photons. The research was co-financed by the Foundation for Polish Science under the TEAM program with funds from the Intelligent Development program (POIR).
Thanks to the combination of two- and three-photon images, it is possible not only to locate the sites of annihilation, and thus the tumor, but also to determine the time of annihilation. On the basis of this parameter, it is possible to determine, for example, the degree of cancer malignancy and its other anatomical and morphological properties.
