25.10.2018

A team of scientists headed by Prof. Anna Goździcka-Józefiak from the Faculty of Biology, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, researches the properties of a common plant – celandine, which may be an effective drug for some cancers caused by HPV (human papilloma virus).

Celandine (Chelidonium majus), which is common in Poland, has been used in folk medicine for removing warts since antiquity. The plant is a well-known remedy for skin lesions, it also has cholagogic, antimicrobial, calming and analgesic properties.

As a result of research, some properties of celandine have been scientifically confirmed. New applications have also been discovered. It turned out, among others, that extracts from Chelidonium reduce the risk of new endometriosis foci. This is important because so far no effective method for treating this disease leading to infertility has been developed.
