Dr Anna Olejnik from the Faculty of Chemistry at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań will carry out a project ‘Technology for obtaining macromolecular UVA/UVB filters for modern cosmetic preparations’. For her research, she has won PLN 1.5 million from the National Centre for Research and Development. The project is conducted in cooperation with the Technology Halls Team of the Centre for Advanced Technology.

Exposure to sunlight is considered to be one of the main contributors to skin cancer. Therefore, there is a need to develop new macromolecular UV filters that do not penetrate the skin, are photostable and non-toxic.

The project is primarily aimed at manufacturers of cosmetic raw materials. They are the ones who would subsequently have to purchase licences and then carry out additional research. Their costs are very high, but many companies are already showing interest in this research and in the new UV filters.
