Dr Adrian Smędowski, Department of Physiology of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice was awarded the Polish Smart Development Award 2020 in the category of scientist of the future.
He was awarded for his activities undertaken under the projects: “Development of a novel experimental gene therapy in the treatment of glaucoma – the role of RNA binding proteins” and “Investigation of the potential mechanism of chronic inflammation in the eye adnexa induced by prostaglandin analogues without preservatives”.
Dr Smędowski is a member of the European Glaucoma Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the International Society of Experimental Ophthalmology. The main topic of his research is neuroprotection and neuroregeneration of retinal ganglion cells in the course of glaucomatous neuropathy, experimental therapies in glaucoma, and molecular mechanisms accompanying the neurodegeneration of retinal ganglion cells.
