Aleksandra Rodziewicz, PhD student of the Department of Pathology and Experimental Rheumatology of the Medical University of Gdańsk, received a grant of the Nutricia Foundation for the project “The impact of a gluten-eliminating diet on the quality of life, inflammation and composition of the intestinal microbiome in people with autoimmune thyroiditis”.

The aim of the project is to find out whether the popular gluten-free diet is having health benefits in women with autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s disease) without celiac disease. The value of the project and co-financing is almost PLN 100,000. PLN.

Gluten elimination in Hashimoto’s disease is promoted on the Internet as well as by many specialists, despite the lack of research on the effects of such treatment. What’s more, there is a probability that the elimination of gluten negatively affects the composition of the intestinal microbiome, which is why it should not be introduced without a scientific proof.
