Dr Eng. Ewelina Rudnicka from the Department of Physical Chemistry of the Poznań University of Technology will implement the project “Polysaccharides as binders in lithium-ion and sodium-ion cells”. She obtained a grant for her research in the Miniature competition of the National Science Center.
Lithium-ion cells are currently the primary source of power for portable electronic devices such as smartphones and laptops. The components of these systems are usually organic compounds that are difficult to utilize. From the point of view of green chemistry, it seems important to replace these elements with environmentally friendly materials.
The research activity will include the use of water-soluble polysaccharides as binders in the electrodes of the second type of cells in order to eliminate soluble binders in the hostile environment of cyclic carbonates. In addition, the research will cover sodium-ion systems that are to be an alternative to lithium-ion.
