Researchers from the Silesian University of Technology have developed an innovative method to produce biohydrogen using industrial sludge from food processing. Biohydrogen, produced using micro-organisms, is a promising renewable energy source.
Organic compounds previously treated as waste are a rich source of organic material, ideal for use in fermentation processes. Wastewater generated in the food industry contains glucose, milk powder, palm oil and other ingredients. A key element of the new method is the use of metallic nanoparticles, containing silver and copper, which increase the efficiency of the process, speeding it up.
The application of the technology could bring significant economic and environmental benefits, particularly in food processing plants and wastewater treatment plants. Although still in the basic research phase, the method promises a promising future in terms of sustainability and carbon footprint reduction.
