Researchers from the University of Lodz developing a method of soil purification by plants

19.04.2021

Dr Magdalena Urbaniak, University of Lodz and Elżbieta Mierzejewska, a PhD student of the University of Lodz are working on an effective and safe method of soil cleaning by plants. The scientists believe that cucurbits (cucumbers, squash, zucchini, melon or watermelon) are particularly effective for this process.

The first research results show that cucurbits have extremely beneficial cleansing properties and are not harming to their environment – informs the Promotion Center of the University of Lodz.

The results obtained so far will be developed and supplemented by foreign research internships: Dr Magdalena Urbaniak will continue it in Japan, at the Kobe University, which is a leading unit in the field of plant genetics. Elżbieta Mierzejewska will develop her research at the University of Hasselt (Belgium). As part of the ETIUDA 7 project, NCN she will spend 6 months on a research internship at the Center for Environmental Research, which is a leading unit in the field of research on biological methods of environmental remediation.
