Scientist from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań to translate the Chinese philosophical treatise

04.12.2019

Dr Dawid Rogacz from the Faculty of Philosophy of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan has received a research grant within the competition Universalia 2.2 II / 2018 as part of the National Program for the Development of Humanities.

The grant will allow him to translate into Polish of “Balanced Essays” (“Lunheng”) by Wang Chong (27-97 CE). It is a systematic philosophical treatise that is a monument of the Chinese sceptical and natural philosophy. It will be the first translation of a Chinese philosopher in history published in the PWN Library Classics Philosophy series, which has been published since 1952.

Dr Rogacz’s work is also significant because so far only translations of Confucius, Laozi and Zhuangzi were available to the Polish readers. There was no Polish edition of the work written after the second century BC. To compare to Western philosophy, it is as if only the works of ancient Greek philosophers were available in Polish, and works written for several following centuries were unavailable.
