Scientist of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology to study quasicrystals

19.08.2020

Dr Eng. Piotr Bardziński from the Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology is conducting research on quasicrystals – solids with a unique structure, discovered only 38 years ago. He is studying their structure, thermal stability and phase composition.

The original structure of quasicrystals means that they have properties that are characteristic only of themselves. They are, for example, poor thermal and electrical conductors, and at the same time they are very hard and resistant to chemicals and corrosion.

Dr Eng. Bardziński conducts research on quasicrystals in cooperation with foreign partners. He developed 18 different four-component aluminum-based alloys, which he tested just after creation, after heat treatment and after crash with a projectile of a certain velocity. The last test was to check the resistance of the quasicrystalline structure to the so-called high-energy impacts.
