Scientists developed compounds that can be used in cancer therapy

27.10.2020

Scientists of the University of Silesia and the Slovak Komenius University in Bratislava have developed compounds with an embedded naphthalene ring. The patented compounds can be used as active substances, especially in drugs effective in the treatment of colorectal cancer, especially neoplasms with the TP53 gene mutation.

Cytostatic drugs are used for the pharmacological fight against cancer. They are characterized by low selectivity – they have the ability to damage not only cancer cells, but also healthy ones. Low effectiveness of therapy and undesirable side effects that reduce the effectiveness of drugs and reduce the quality of life of patients – are still the greatest challenges for the pharmaceutical industry.

The compounds developed by Silesian scientists can produce anti-cancer agents with high selectivity – they are supposed to damage cancer cells and be mild towards normal cells.
