Scientists from the Department of Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Geoengineering of the University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) in Olsztyn are conducting research on the development of biogas refining technology to the quality of biomethane.

The enriched biogas contains up to 99% of methane and has about 40-50% of higher calorific value than gas-raw material. It can be pumped into the gas network. It can also be compressed like natural gas and used as fuel for propelling vehicles. “It is currently the most preferred and energetically future-oriented form of using biogas”, says Prof. Marcin Zieliński, head of the team of scientists.

In the course of the research, scientists from UWM developed a sorbent consisting mainly of stabilized sewage sludge and a few other additives, which purifies the biogas into a mixture containing as much as 99% of methane and less than 1% of CO2. Such gas is already suitable for the network and for driving engines in vehicles.
