Researchers at the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław (UPWr) have been studying the history of the Książ Castle gardens for several years. They have recently established that their design was made in the 1870s by Eduard Neide, director of the royal Tiergarten gardens in Berlin.
“He is known not only for his designs for Berlin’s Tiergarten park, as well as the designer of the gardens in the Albrechtsberg in Dresden and urban areas in Hamburg”, says Dr Justyna Jaworek-Jakubska from the Department of Landscape Architecture at UPWr.
Two extremely valuable elements from the former garden-park composition by Eduard Neide have survived to this day. On the Chestnut Terrace we can see a characteristic line of trees. It is formed by chestnut trees, which, according to Dr Robert Sobolewski of the Department of Landscape Architecture at UPWr, are the oldest trees on the garden terraces. The second element is the park promenade, once called ‘Kunsstrasse’, which connects the Forecourt with the Lubiechowska Gate.
