A Polish-Slovenian team of scientists is studying the processes of cave formation. The aim of the project is to learn about the early stages of sulphide mineralisation in southern Poland, which led to the development of rich deposits of non-ferrous metal ores in the geological past.

The scientists based their hypotheses on the assumption that certain processes leading to the formation of caves are repeated in different places and at different times on Earth, provided similar conditions occur. The dedolomitisation phenomena currently observed in the Mravljetovo Brezno v Gošarjevih Rupah cave may provide the information needed to understand the early stages of sulphide mineralisation in southern Poland.

The analyses of the collected material relate to a certain stage of cave development, in which the rock mass was prepared in such a way that metal sulphides could precipitate there from circulating solutions. The researchers hope that the analogy observed in the Slovenian and Polish sites will shed some light on the topic of interest.
