Scientists from the University of Wrocław to check where biogas plants to be constructed

03.07.2020

Researchers from the University of Wroclaw are seeking the answer whether and where in Lower Silesia to invest in the production of biogas from meadow biomass. The project is financed by the Provincial Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Wrocław.

Biogas is obtained through the fermentation of organic compounds: food industry waste, plants or animal excrements. It consists primarily of methane and carbon dioxide. It produces energy through combustion and oxidation processes and it is used for electricity production. Researchers from the Institute of Geological Sciences and the Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław are testing the possibility of obtaining biogas from mowing wastes.

Wroclaw scientists intend to select areas in the vicinity of Wrocław where it will be worth locating biogas plants. They are researching how to manage meadows, their area and the biogas potential of specific plant species.
