Researchers from the Medical University of Wroclaw have found a relationship between the risk of developing a multi-system inflammatory syndrome associated with COVID-19 (Pediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome, PIMS) and the gender and age of the child, the university website reads.

PIMS, an immunological complication after infection with SARS-Cov-2, more often affects teenage boys – according to research conducted by scientists from three Polish universities and the Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, published in December this year. in the prestigious journal “Scientific Reports”.

PIMS is usually manifested by high fever, gastrointestinal complaints (mainly abdominal pain), rash, conjunctivitis, sometimes headache and many other symptoms. Involvement of the circulatory system is also characteristic of the disease – in the acute stage, patients develop symptoms of heart failure, while the formation of coronary aneurysms may be a permanent complication.
