Scientists of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology are working on the technology of processing aluminum alloys (5xxx series) used in 3D printing. Research is possible thanks to a grant from the Leader program of the National Center for Research and Development.
The 5xxx series magnesium-containing alloys have great potential for use in the automotive and marine industries due to their properties, including high corrosion resistance. The scientists intend to dope the alloy with nano-additives – incl. titanium, boron, zirconium or scandium. This will prevent hot cracks that can occur during the 3D printing process and affect the properties of the alloy.
The researchers’ goal is to produce high-quality parts for the maritime industry, especially shipbuilding and the production of motor yachts, but also for the automotive industry. The scientists are planning to create a spin-off company whose task will be to commercialize the results of the project.
