Scientists of Opole and Silesia conduct unique coronavirus experiment

05.11.2020

Scientists of the University of Opole, the Cardio-Med Silesia Medical Technology Park in Zabrze and the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice conducted a research experiment involving the performance of serological tests on health care workers to check whether they had become immune to the coronavirus.

The tests were performed in 3 hospitals, including the University Teaching Hospital in Opole. About 200 doctors, nurses, diagnosticians and paramedics were examined. The tests consisted of collecting venous blood twice, at two-week intervals. After centrifugation, the scientists received blood serum was obtained to perform a serological test using enzyme immunoassays (ELISA), with determined antibodies in three classes: IgA, IgM and IgG.

The results indicate that some medical personnel came into contact with the virus and produced IgG antibodies, which may condition immunity to re-infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
