Scientists of the University of Silesia in Katowice have developed active substances that will be able to disinfect the most valuable book collections and archives, as well as various surfaces, such as paintings or posters. The solution received a patent.

The aim of the researchers was to develop substances that effectively destroy microbes, but will not influence the delicate structure of paper, leather or parchment, will not react with pigments and dyes, and will not be toxic to the environment and humans. Scientists decided to use quinoline derivatives and in their research they determined what concentration of the active substance is sufficient to kill the fungus colonies.

The tested compounds show antimicrobial properties in relation to specific species of fungi, they are also safe for the structure of paper, leather or parchment, as well as for people and the environment.
