The Medical University of Silesia will carry out a project to combat cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The European Commission has approved the proposal created as part of a consortium of which the Silesian university is a member.
The Silesian Medical University (SUM) is a member of the consortium as an Associated Partner, and the main coordinator of activities on the Polish side is the Karol Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences in Poznan.
“Cardiovascular diseases and diabetes are the leading causes of death worldwide. The costs of treating non-communicable diseases are high and are expected to rise further, also taking into account the ageing population of the European Union. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has posed new health challenges and shown that NCDs can dramatically increase the negative impact of other diseases”, says Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Department of Internal Medicine, Diabetes and Nephrology, SUM, Dr Joanna Żywiec.
