Student of the University of Wroclaw receives the Silver Medal of Chemistry

Wojciech Stawski, a student of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Wrocław won the Silver Medal of Chemistry in a competition organized by the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He kept the award for the work “Tetrafirine Hybrids (1.1.1.1) and Triphyrin (2.1.1) – Synthesis and Characterization”

Triphyrins and tetrafirins belong to porphyrinoids (similar to hemoglobin or chlorophyll), some of which may be used in photocatalysis and photodynamic therapy, used for example in the treatment of cancer.

The laureate is a graduate of bachelor’s studies and a first-year student of chemistry. This year he started his research at the University of Cambridge. In addition to the medal, he also received a cash prize of 5,000. PLN.

The goal of the Gold Medal of Chemistry competition, organized in cooperation with DuPont, is to select the best undergraduate or engineering theses in the field of chemistry and its connection with physics and biology.
