Students of the Gdańsk University of Technology work out solution for more effective fight against kidney tumors

15.10.2020

Scientists and students of the Gdańsk University of Technology have developed an innovative system for recognizing the malignancy of kidney tumors. It will allow to make a more accurate diagnosis, as well as reduce the number of unnecessary surgeries that jeopardize the health and life of patients.

Most of the patients who develop kidney tumors are the elderly, for whom surgery to remove the tumor may be highly risky. About 900 operations are performed in Poland annually, which unnecessarily endanger the health of patients and significantly worsen their quality of life. According to doctors, if the tumor is not malignant, it is safer not to undergo surgery and leave the tumor only for further observation.

Scientists and students of the Gdańsk University of Technology have developed the TITAN (Technology In Tumor ANalysis) system, which uses machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms to determine the probability of kidney tumor malignancy based on a CT scan of the abdominal cavity.
