Students of the University of Bialystok to help the amphibians

29.03.2019

Spring migration of amphibians on many Polish roads causes their mass deaths under the wheels of cars. In order to help frogs, toads or grass frogs safely reach the place of breeding, students from the Biologists’ Circle of the University of Bialystok (UwB) once again got involved in the Płotki Action.

In place of their activities, they chose the Tsar’s Way – a route intersecting the Biebrza National Park, on the section between Osowiec and Laskowiec. Biologists have been conducting studies on mortality of vertebrates including amphibians, for several years. The data is alarming: the increasing traffic on the Tsar’s Road has a clear impact on amphibian mortality.

To help the amphibians, the students in cooperation with the Biebrza National Park (BPN) set 800 meters of fences made of agrotextiles that prevent the frogs, toads or grass frogs from going out into the road. Pools are dug along the fences, where wandering animals fall. Twice a day buckets are checked and amphibians are safely transferred to the other side of the road.
