Students of the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław research fragrances regulating the appetite

28.10.2020

Jacek Łyczko, a PhD student at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław, received a nearly 1.5 million grant under the Lider program of the National Center for Research and Development. He is planning to create a new generation of appetite regulators. It will use natural and safe fragrances.

The team selected and managed by the PhD student include primarily young researchers under the age of 30. They are planning to use natural and safe essential oils and food flavors to create special aroma combinations on blotters (cardboard strips that we use in perfumeries) to increase or decrease the appetite.

Firstly, during an extensive survey, the team will check what aromas Poles associate with tasty food. Then, the scientists will compose the appropriate smells, check them chemically, present them for analysis to sensory experts, and use magnetic resonance to test their influence on the appropriate centers in the human brain.
