Students of the Warsaw University of Technology create Star Wars lightsabre

Aleksandra Fliszkiewicz, a student at the Warsaw University of Technology (PW), created a lightsaber as an engineering thesis.

-I presented such an idea to Dr Petelczyc of the Faculty of Physics of the Warsaw University of Technology just after the premiere of the 8th part of Star Wars.

The sabre has a green laser and a so-called “lightsabre lens” that focuses the light into the beam. Thanks to this we have obtained the lightsabre effect. The sword’s handle is printed on a 3D printer – explains student PW.

Dr Eng. Krzysztof Petelczyc says that the lightsabre known from films has several properties that cannot be achieved by the PW students. First of all, the laser beam cannot be seen from the side, unless we find ourselves in fog or smoke. We also can’t make two swords held by knights bounce off of each other. In addition, the movie swords make a characteristic buzzing sound while the laser swords are quiet – adds the scientist.
