Toruń scientists win competition of the Ministry of Climate and Environment “Geology 2021”

Dr Piotr Weckwerth, Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management, the Nicolaus Copernicus University, together with his research team, received the main prize in the category “Achievement, fundamental discovery” in the Geology 2021 competition organized by the Ministry of Climate and Environment. 

The competition awarded projects for the development and promotion of Polish geology, innovative and highly effective scientific, technical, technological, organizational, ideological and economic solutions as well as new discoveries in geology.

The Toruń scientists were awarded for the discovery of the “Glacial megaflood in the Suwałki Region”. Their research shows that during the last glaciation in the area of ​​today’s Suwałki Region, one of the largest floods in the history of the Earth took place. The melting ice sheet released huge amounts of water accumulated in a gigantic glacial lake, which significantly changed the landscape of Central Europe over a dozen days.
