University of Warsaw striving for climate neutrality

08.07.2021

The University of Warsaw (UW) is planning to monitor and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and, in the longer term, is striving for climate neutrality and adapting to climate change. The intentions of the largest Polish university were presented by the Rector’s Plenipotentiary for Environment and Sustainable Development, Dr Robert Rybski.

In May, the rector of the University of Warsaw, Prof. Alojzy Nowak, appointed Dr Robert Rybski as the plenipotentiary for the environment and sustainable development. The University of Warsaw is the first Polish university to create this function.

The Rector’s Team for Ecology and Climate Crisis is developing a draft of low-emission transformation strategy for the University. The strategy would bring the University of Warsaw closer to climate neutrality. It will also be expanded and it will include pro-environmental measures, which will serve to adapt the University to climate change.

As Dr Rybski stated, the goal of the strategy is not only to initiate action for the climate. It is also supposed to diagnose the current condition and enable the assessment of the effectiveness of current activities. It will also indicate what still needs to be done- said Dr Rybski.
