US Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski visited the Warsaw School of Agriculture and Life Sciences (SGGW) in Warsaw. During talks with SGGW authorities, the university’s historical ties with the USA were discussed, as well as SGGW’s current scientific cooperation with American universities.
One of the highlights of the US Ambassador’s visit to SGGW was the ceremonial unveiling of a commemorative plaque in front of a 200-year-old black walnut tree (Juglans nigra L.). The tree was planted by Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz, a prominent writer and politician, owner of the estate which gave its name to the Warsaw district of Ursynów. According to a historical account, the walnut sapling was given to Niemcewicz by George Washington, the first President of the United States, during his tour of America in 1797-1807.
Mark Brzezinski stressed that he enjoyed meeting scientists. “It does not matter where we are from. Great science knows no borders”, said the American ambassador.
