The team from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw (UW), consisting of Jakub Kośmicki (captain), Sara Gałan, Paweł Kałwak, Piotr Łukawski, Kuba Hevler and Magdalena Orłowska, won the Polish Physicists’ Tournament, thus qualifying for the world competition in the International Physicists’ Tournament.
The UW was represented by six students, who had to solve tasks requiring experiments and theory testing. How do you break the central limit theorem in a physical system? When does a circle with its mass distributed asymmetrically, rather than in the centre, break away from the ground? Such questions were answered by UW representatives at the Polish Tournament of Physicists.
“The students knew the tasks beforehand and had been preparing their solutions since the beginning of the semester: they conducted experiments, tested various theories and wrote programmes to simulate physical phenomena”, says team supervisor Paweł Szczypkowski from the Physics Department.
Thanks to their victory in the tournament, the young physicists qualified for the International Physicists’ Tournament, which will be held in Zurich in April.
