Researchers from the West Pomeranian University of Technology (ZUT) in Szczecin have developed cages to help fishermen catch specific species while preventing the destruction of, for example, protected ones.

Researchers from the Faculty of Food and Fisheries Sciences at ZUT in Szczecin, together with West Pomeranian fishermen, are fighting to maintain the biodiversity of the Baltic Sea. By the end of this year, they are taking part in a pilot project to develop a system of innovative fish traps. It is intended to be suitable for use in both marine and inland waters.

‘The cages we have designed will help fishermen to catch specific species and at the same time prevent the destruction of those that are, for example, under protection. This happens very often nowadays, as nets are taken out of the water by ‘dragging’, which results in the accidental killing of fish that are not allowed to be caught in a given period of time,’ says Prof Przemysław Czerniejewski of ZUT.
