Researchers from the Medical University of Wrocław (UM) and the University of Physical Education in Wrocław (AWF) have examined the efficiency of runners-marathon runners over 50 years of age. This is the first such study in Poland.
The average age of people practicing long-distance running is steadily growing, hence explaining the physiological factors that affect their results are necessary. Some of the studies by the AWF scientists have shown that after a marathon effort, the quadriceps muscles do not stiffen, but the calf triceps muscles, at least this is the case with runners 50+.
In their part of the research, UM scientists focused on the regulation of the autonomic activity of the circulatory and respiratory systems in runners. For this purpose, they examined a group of 23 men aged 50+ taking part in the Wrocław Marathon. The surprising result of the research is the fact that the expansion of blood vessels after the marathon in the elderly is completely unrelated to the achieved result.
