Archaeologists from the University of Lodz searching the beginnings of the 15th century Lodz

26.10.2021

Scientists and students from the Institute of Archeology of the University of Łódź (UŁ) are carrying out excavations in the Old Market Square in Łódź. -We are searching the 15th-century roots of Łódź. We want to establish whether medieval Łódź was actually established in this place and whether it began to develop here – says Dr Eng. Artur Ginter.

Łódź is one of the few cities that has not confirmed its late medieval origins with archaeological methods.

Archaeological works are carried out on an area of approximately 5.5 acres across the entire Old Market Square, which is the center of the oldest urban organism, according to many historians.

The Old Market Square, its surroundings and adjoining streets have not been archaeologically researched so far and there is a big chance to find out for the first time whether it was located here when Łódź was granted city rights in 1423.
