25.10.2021

The Department of Military Studies and Strategic Studies and the Military History Laboratory of the Institute of History of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) in Olsztyn are inviting participants to the scientific conference “Eastern Roads to Independence 1918-1920” on October 28, 2021.

The organizers are planning to draw attention to Polish military formations in the East and their contribution to Poland’s independence. They are proposing to research the fate of Polish independence armed units formed mainly after the liquidation of Polish corps in Russia in May and June 1918.

The Olsztyn researchers are interested in the fate of such units as the 4th Polish Rifle Division, organized in the Kuban and active in southern Russia and Bessarabia from the fall of 1918 to the summer of 1919. Similarly, they are planning to research the history of the branch of the Polish Army in Northern Russia called the Murmanczyks – the Polish troops formed as a result of the arrangements of General Józef Haller and General Frederick Cuthbert Poole, operating in the vicinity of Murmansk and Arkhangelsk.
