First Discouri Centers launched

Aleksandra Pekowska and Grzegorz Sumara studied biology in Poland, for many years they conducted research in the best institutes abroad, and in 2018 they won an international competition in a new program initiated by the Max Planck Society. Now they will create their own research teams at the Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.

Jarosław Gowin, Minister of Science and Higher Education, Anja Karliczek, German Minister of Education and Research, Martin Stratmann, president of the Max Planck Society and Zbigniew Błocki, director of the National Science Center took part in the opening ceremony.
Aleksandra Pekowska and Grzegorz Sumara are engaged as two world-class scientists in the field of molecular biology in Poland. This is an important element of our efforts to internationalize the Polish scientific landscape – said Jarosław Gowin, Minister of Science and Higher Education.

The financing of the Dioscuri Centers is supported by scientific partners from Germany and equally by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Dioscuri is a program developed by the Max Planck Society to support the development of Centers of Scientific Excellence in Central and Eastern Europe.
