Gdańsk scientists confirmed the presence of the British type of coronavirus in Pomerania

02.02.2021

Researchers of the intercollegiate biotechnology department of the University of Gdańsk and the Medical University of Gdańsk conducted a pilot high-throughput study of complete genome sequences of the pandemic coronavirus. The study confirmed the presence of a “British genotype” of the virus in two distant poviats.

A variant of the virus with a potentially higher spreading potential was isolated from samples collected on January 8-13, 2021. The analysis of the samples in terms of genetics began on January 26.

Initial preparation and characterization of samples was carried out by the Hematology Laboratory of the University Clinical Center in Gdańsk and at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology Diagnostyka in Gdansk. The pilot, in-depth genetic analysis in the Pomeranian Voivodeship will also be continued in the coming week with the participation of other units, e.g. the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine in Gdynia.
