Dr Beata Zima from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Shipbuilding at the Gdansk University of Technology has won the Scientific Award of the Committee on Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. She was honoured for three authored and ten co-authored publications in internationally recognised journals.

The series on non-destructive methods of identifying, localising and assessing different types of damage in various engineering structures consists of two parts. The first includes seven publications on the diagnosis of thin-walled components made of metal alloys.

The second part consists of six articles on the detection and assessment of the degradation of adhesive joints at the concrete-steel interface in reinforced concrete elements using guided waves.  Damage in the form of hard-to-detect closed delaminations can locally significantly reduce the strength of the structure and cause corrosion outbreaks.
