The Year of Copernicus will be officially launched in Olsztyn on Saturday, 21 January 2023. The region, with which Nicolaus Copernicus tied his fate for more than 40 years, wants to commemorate the legacy of the great Polish astronomer with dignity. The University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) in Olsztyn is actively involved in the event.

“For our University, caring for the legacy of Nicolaus Copernicus is something natural – it is not only part of the mission accompanying all scientific units, but is also an obligation undertaken with the choice of the great scientist as the patron of the UWM Medical College”, said Professor Jerzy Przyborowski, Rector of UWM.

The University of Warmia and Mazury is one of the organisers of the World Copernican Congress, which will take place in 2023 in Toruń, Kraków and Olsztyn. It is being prepared jointly with UWM by Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Jagiellonian University in Kraków and the Polish Academy of Sciences. The Congress will be inaugurated on 19 February in Toruń, on the astronomer’s 550th birthday.
