The BioExplor project at the Wrocław University of Life Sciences is opening up new perspectives in research into the mycobiome of forest flora. The research focuses on discovering the potential of endophytic fungi – from the development of new antibiotics to the production of natural biopigments.

From isolated endophytic fungi inhabiting plant tissues, the team of researchers has obtained compounds with promising antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant and anticancer properties. Among the researchers’ achievements is also the development of research on the Monascus fungus responsible for the production of a red biopigment, widely used in the food industry.

The BioExplor project reaches beyond medicine with its activities, entering the field of industrial biotechnology. The team has identified fungi capable of producing, among other things, beta-carotene and melanin, biopigments of great industrial interest due to their applications in food, cosmetics and other products.
