The Committee on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association (CNMNC-IMA) has approved a new mineral, Karwowskiite, discovered by researchers at the University of Silesia.

The mineral was named in honour of Prof. Dr. Łukasz Karwowski (1945-2022) – a long-time fellow of the University of Silesia in Katowice, an outstanding mineralogist and discoverer of two new phosphate minerals found in the Morasko meteorite. Prof. Karwowski was one of the best researchers of meteorites, especially phosphorites, with merrillite which is unparalleled on Earth.

The new mineral was found in Jordan near the town of Al Qatrana. Karwowskiite belongs to the merrillite group and is a kind of Earth ‘meteorite’ mineral. It co-occurs with nickelphosphide (Ni,Fe)3P, found so far only in meteorites.
